PCSOs help tackle important quality of life issues, such as vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Their main duties are to carry out high visibility patrols to prevent public disorder and nuisance; and also to respond to requests for assistance from the public to deal with anti-social behaviour. A PCSO has the power to detain a person for a period of up to 30 minutes, pending the arrival of a police constable. They also have the power to require a person's name and address following reasonable belief of a relevant offence. They can also issue fixed penalty notice for various offences including injury, alarm or distress or disorder, dog fouling, litter, cycling on a footpath, or loss or damage to property including graffiti/fly posting.

Accredited Community Safety Officers

HCC's Community Safety Officers Paul Mooney and Mark Dhanda, are accredited
by the police and patrol the streets of this area and deal with an array of minor incidents. While they are more often seen in the Totton & Waterside areas they are easy to spot in their bright yellow jackets, bearing the Community Safety Scheme emblem. They have the power to issue fixed penalty notices for anti social offences including the ability to deal with anyone who may be suspected of underage drinking or smoking, and confiscate alcohol and tobacco in such cases. Their presence will help police officers to focus more easily on core police functions. If you wish to report incidents of anti-social behaviour, they can be contacted on 0845 600 1747. More information can be found at www.hants.gov.uk/communitysafety.
